Press releases used to be the primary way of communication between business enterprises and the media. With the technological innovations, especially in reference to the Internet, the traditional way of doing press releases is now less effective because journalists and readers alike, want few details which incorporate social media, linking multimedia to make it more relevant.
When you compare that to traditional multi-page press releases, it becomes fairly obvious that the way information is being put together and received has changed. In today’s society you want to send a social media news release, rather than a press release in print. So I’m going to go over how you should put one together.
Headline
You need a headline that describes exactly what this news release is about. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point, without using slang. Under that, you can also have a secondary headline, which isn’t always going to be a necessity, but it can give readers some more insight and influence them to continue reading. This goes right under the main headline, and you need to follow the same guidelines as you would for the initial headline.
Overview
This section needs to basically be a summary of what you’re going to discuss in the following few paragraphs. Give them a brief description of what it will cover and keep it limited to just one or two paragraphs. Use those same keywords you used in your headline(s) and write content that will hook your readers and convince them to continue.
Body and Facts
Next comes the body, or the meat of your release. This is where you can go into a little more detail and can use several paragraphs to describe what the release is about. After that section, create a short section of facts, where you have just a few bullet points of any sources or statistics that are relevant to what you discussed in the body.
About
Put this section after you have your facts listed. This section is a quick, few sentences just to talk about your brand or company. Include a website for your readers to find more information about your business, rather than giving the details of it in this section. Keep this part short.
Links and Tags
Include a section of multimedia links to images, videos, and RSS so readers can connect with uploads that are relevant to your release. Then include relevant links, which can include links to previous releases. You should also have an area where you post tags. This is where you can suggest tagging for your readers to help promote social bookmarking of your release.
Put It All Together
Once you have all of that information, throw it all together and send it out. You have all of the pertinent information, in a short social media news release that people will actually take some time to read, rather than having to go through multiple pages of documents to find out what the point is. Follow these tips and your readers can decide from the beginning if it’s information they care about or not and then since it’s short, they’ll be able to read through the whole thing without getting bored.
