
If you’ve joined Twitter, you probably have already seen what is known as a hashtag. Twitter hashtags (#) are what people use to search for tweets that have a common topic. For example, if you search for the term “#thanksgiving” (it’s not case sensitive so it doesn’t matter how you type it in), you will get all of the results that incorporate that hashtag. You can use hashtags to promote events that your business is going to be conducting. Use a hashtag in your update, then remind the users of that hashtag, and then use it to follow and participate in conversations that are going on in regards to that event.

Promote your content by using a hashtag. Use it to push a blog post or any other content on a topic to gear it toward a targeted audience.
Information
Getting information about certain topics or to get research is another use for the Twitter hashtags. Follow a specific hashtag in relevance to a specific topic to do some research and see what people are saying.
Conversations
Hashtags make it easy to monitor conversations. Follow certain hashtags to a particular industry or business to monitor and participate in those conversations.
Contests
If you want to run a contest of competition, tell your followers they need to promote a certain hashtag to be entered in the contest. Whatever it may be, the more competitors you have, the more your hashtags will be used, and the more followers you can obtain.
