Check in on Facebook

Location-based social networking applications now make it possible for businesses to get instant exposure. And it’s free.

Facebook users can now “check in” when visiting  a location. That activity is then updated on their Facebook page, which lets friends know their whereabouts. The marketing potential and opportunities for businesses big and small can’t be overlooked.

The check-in application is easy to use, too. The next time you log onto Facebook with your mobile device, look for the “Check In” button at the right corner of the screen. Check In is available for the iPhone, Android and Blackberry.

CHECK IN ANY TIME YOU’RE AT A BUSINESS

Facebook, which has more than 500 million users, uses GPS technology to track users’ locations. So any time you’re at the physical location of a business, you can check in through your mobile device’s Facebook app.  Facebook users can also leave comments about your company, which updates your Places page on Facebook.  The page will include a map of your business location, the number of check-ins, and even the people who are at your business.

IMMEDIATE EXPOSURE

Facebook users can also tag their friends with the Check In application. When they do, a message is posted on their friends’ profiles, which other people can see. And that can give your business immediate exposure.

HOW YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT

Businesses can use the Check In application to reward their customers while potentially generating more foot traffic by offering discounts or specials. For example, a “Check In” event could reward participating customers with a special offer. Doing so gives them a reason to return. And chances are, if they are repeat customers, they will tell their friends about your business, too.

Types of Check In deals to consider offering:

* Individual deals: You can offer an individual deal to either a new or existing customer any time you launch a new product or during a specific time of year (like seasonal incentives).

* Group deals: You can offer discounts to groups when they check in together. This, in turn, generates even more exposure to your business.

* Loyalty deal: After a set number of check-ins, customers could be offered a special loyalty deal.

BUILD YOUR FAN BASE, INCREASE FOOT TRAFFIC

Check In helps businesses and consumers. Customers can potentially earn great deals from companies while locating nearby friends. And businesses can use it to create incentives for anyone who enters their store. Perhaps the most attractive part of Check In, though, is it’s viral marketing capabilities. Every check-in appears in the news feed of the customer’s friends Facebook page. That opens up the potential for hundreds of new customers coming through your door every day.
